The permittee shall pump, bail or otherwise remove any water, that accumulates in the trenches. It shall perform all work necessary to keep the trenches clear of water while the foundations and the masonry are being constructed or the pipe laid. Unless otherwise specifically permitted by the City Engineer, water, either from surface or subsurface origin, will not be permitted in the trenches at any time during construction and until backfilling over the top of the pipe has been completed; nor will the groundwater level in the trench be permitted to rise above an elevation of six inches below the pipe. Dewatering trenches, when required, may be accomplished in any manner the permittee desires, provided the chosen method has the approval of the City Engineer. Any damage resulting from the failure of the chosen method to operate properly, however, shall be the responsibility of the permittee, and shall be repaired, in a manner satisfactory to the City Engineer, at the permittee’s expense.
